A Bit About Newcastle

Newcastle is united by seven bridges across a large and gorgeous riverscape. This city is on the north bank of the River Tyne, and makes for a vibrant visitor location, booming with cultural activity and tradition. Though it is one of the coldest major cities in England, that really doesn’t stop it from being a warm centre for art and culture! A lot of artists have taken Newcastle as the inspiration behind their art.

This amazing place was originally a settlement that was called Pons Aelius but was later renamed after the Roman fort that once stood at its centre.

A must-see place in Newcastle is Newcastle Quayside, which gives you a perfect mix of entertainment and eateries. The city is also packed with nightlife and vibrancy, all interlinked together to give you an amazing location with something to do for everyone in the family!

Apart from its well-known nightlife in the modern era, Newcastle also has deep roots in history. One of the major locations that pays homage to history is the Grainger Town area.

Considered to be the historical heart of the city, the area was built between 1835 and 1842 by Richard Grainger and is packed with some of the most famous and well-known buildings and streets. Some of them are Grainger Market, Grey Street, Grainger Street, Theatre Royal, and Clayton Street. The buildings are normally four stories high and have domes, turrets, and spikes, marking their time in history.

Grainger apparently found Newcastle in bricks and wood, and turned it to stone instead, developing it further. This just highlights how much Newcastle may have changed over the years, but still holds a piece of history within its heart.

Another famous thing to see in Newcastle is the River Tyne, which is the focal point for so many artists featured on our website.

There are also a lot of famous Geordies from Newcastle! In fact, George Stephenson, the “Father of Railways”, was a Geordie. Apart from him, Newcastle is also the birthplace of comedian Rowan Atkinson and singers like Sting and Cheryl. Did you know that Jimi Hendrix, the world-famous guitarist, was actually discovered by a Geordie producer named Chas Chandler?

There’s no wonder that Newcastle is the inspiration behind so much art!
