DID YOU KNOW? 5 Fun Facts About Peugeot!

1. They Started Out As A Coffee Mill!

Although Peugeot is typically known as one of the world’s oldest car manufacturers, they actually didn’t make cars when they first started. Yes, you read that right! Peugeot was originally founded as a coffee mill in 1810. The French brothers who founded the company (Jean Pierre and Jean-Pierre II) converted their father’s old grain mill into a steel foundry. They produced items like coffee grinders, springs, saws, salt and pepper grinders, and even umbrella frames in this steel foundry.

2. The First-Ever Peugeot Car Actually Had Only 3 Wheels!

Starting off as a coffee mill, it wasn’t until the end of the 19th century that Peugeot actually came out with their first automobile. This was thanks to their designer, Leon Serpollet, who helped design their first-ever car in 1886. Nowadays, you wouldn’t really imagine a car with just 3 wheels, but back then it was revolutionary. This first car was steam-operated, but only 4 of its kind were made. Due to the heaviness of the steam-powered engine, however, getting this car to warm up was a very long and tiring process. So, they called back the vehicle and made improvements to produce the company’s first 4-wheeled automobile, powered by petrol, in 1890.

3. They Produced and Manufactured Military-Grade Vehicles During The First World War!

When World War I rolled in, it put a lot of people’s lives on hold. Peugeot included. The company had to take a break from making normal automobiles and cars because of the onset of the First World War. They then began to produce military vehicles. In fact, Peugeot was actually one of the main and well-known manufacturers of military tanks, shells, arms, and bicycles. This was short-lived, and they went back to making and manufacturing cars once the First World War ended.

4. They Introduced an Electric Vehicle in 1941 In 1941, in order to solve fuel restrictions, Peugeot introduced a small electric vehicle called the VLV. As soon as it came, however, the manufacture of these cars was put on hold because of World War II. Peugeot just can’t seem to catch a break from World Wars! A few years after this, though, they came out with the Peugeot 203 and had record-breaking sales. Late in the ’60s, the last of these little eclectic cars were produced.

5. Peugeot Has a Stockpile of Awards! If you’re a true Peugeot fan, you probably already know this, but they’ve won the “European Car of the Year” award on multiple occasions. In fact, they’re just so good at what they do that they have many awards to show for it.

  • They won first place in 1969 for the Peugeot 504, and then again in 1988 with the Peugeot 1988.

  • They also won this award in 2002 with the Peugeot 307.

  • Many Peugeot cars have won second and third place in the European Car of the Year competition.

  • In 2009, they were awarded the Overall Car of the Year Award for the Peugeot 308 Turbo.

  • They even have two awards for the Semperit Irish Car of the Year.

  • They’ve also won 5 Car of the Year awards in Italy, and 9 in Spain!

5. A Few Bonus Facts! Fun facts are named correctly because they are exactly that. They’re much too fun to just stop at 5, so here are a few more interesting facts about Peugeot:

  • Peugeot is a sponsor for the Sochaux Football club, which was actually started by someone in the Peugeot family!

  • Peugeot is first class when it comes to safety, which is why they have a system called LDWS on their 308 model. This system actually warns you about unintended lane departures.

  • The 308 is such a safe model that it has more safety features, like the Electronic Brake Force Distribution System, the ABS system, and Brake Assist.

  • Peugeot Motorcycles is the foremost manufacturer of European scooters, mopeds and even bicycles. In the span of 80 years (1903-1983), their bikes actually won 10 Tour de Frances races.

  • A Peugeot car driven by Jules Goux won the Indianapolis 500 in 1913.
